What to Expect for Your Maternity Session
Booking a maternity session is a special way to celebrate your pregnancy and document this meaningful season of life. If you’re feeling excited and a little unsure about what the experience will be like, you’re not alone! Knowing what to expect can help you feel relaxed, confident, and ready to enjoy every moment of your session.
Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect before, during, and after your maternity photoshoot.
When to Schedule Your Session
The ideal time for a maternity session is typically between 28–34 weeks. During this window, your baby bump is beautifully visible, and you’re usually still comfortable enough to move, pose, and enjoy the experience. Of course, every pregnancy is different, so we’ll always work with what feels best for you.
If you’re expecting multiples or have a high-risk pregnancy, we may schedule a bit earlier to ensure your comfort and safety.
What to Wear
Choosing outfits is often the biggest question—and it doesn’t have to be stressful! Flowing dresses, fitted gowns that highlight your bump, or soft neutral fabrics photograph beautifully. Solid colors and simple textures tend to work best, keeping the focus on you and your connection with your baby.
If your session includes a partner or children, coordinating colors (not matching exactly) helps create a cohesive look. Comfort is key—when you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows in your photos.
Many photographers also offer client closets or styling guidance, so don’t hesitate to ask for help!
Hair, Makeup, and Prep
You’re welcome to keep things natural or go more polished—there’s no right or wrong choice. Professional hair and makeup can help you feel extra confident and camera-ready, but it’s completely optional.
Before your session:
- Get a good night’s rest if possible
- Stay hydrated
- Moisturize your skin
- Avoid tight clothing right before your session to prevent marks
These small steps can make a big difference in how you feel and look on camera.
During the Session
Your maternity session is designed to be relaxed and comfortable. You don’t need to worry about posing or knowing what to do—I’ll guide you every step of the way. We’ll focus on natural movements, gentle poses, and authentic moments that highlight your bump and your connection to your baby.
Sessions usually last 45–90 minutes, with time for breaks, outfit changes, and adjustments. If you’re bringing a partner or children, we’ll include a mix of solo and family images.
Most importantly, this is your time. We’ll move at your pace and prioritize your comfort throughout the session.
Locations and Style
Maternity sessions can take place outdoors, in a studio, or in the comfort of your home. Each option offers a different feel:
- Outdoor sessions provide natural light and scenic backdrops
- Studio sessions are timeless and controlled
- In-home sessions feel intimate and personal
We’ll choose a location and style that best fits your vision and personality.
After the Session
Once your session is complete, I’ll carefully select and edit the best images. You can expect your gallery within the timeframe discussed at booking. From there, you’ll be able to choose your favorite images, order prints, and select products like albums or wall art to preserve these memories.
A Final Note
Your maternity session isn’t about being “perfect”—it’s about celebrating your body, your strength, and the life you’re growing. Whether this is your first baby or your last, this season deserves to be remembered.
If you have any questions leading up to your session, I’m always here to help. I can’t wait to capture this beautiful chapter for you.
