What to Expect at Your Newborn Photoshoot: A Parent’s Guide to Capturing Those First Precious Moments
There’s nothing quite like the arrival of a newborn — those tiny fingers, button nose, and sleepy snuggles are moments that go by in the blink of an eye. That’s why many parents choose to capture those early days with a newborn photoshoot.
But if you’ve never done one before, you might be wondering: What actually happens at a newborn session? How do you prepare your baby (and yourself)?
Here’s a look at what to expect, from start to finish — so you can relax and enjoy the experience.
When to Book Your Session
I recommend scheduling your session within the first two weeks after birth, ideally between 5–14 days old.
At this stage, babies are still sleepy, flexible, and comfortable being gently posed — perfect for those dreamy, curled-up shots you see in portfolios.
If your baby is a little older, don’t worry! I also offer “older newborn” or lifestyle sessions, which focus more on natural family interactions and awake moments.
Where the Magic Happens
In-Studio Sessions
These are done at our studio, where everything is ready — backdrops, props, blankets, and perfect lighting. Studios are kept warm and cozy (often around 28°C / 82°F) to help baby stay sleepy and comfortable.
What to Bring (and What Not to Worry About)
We can provide everything needed for baby for the session— wraps, headbands, outfits, props, and backdrops.
Still, you’ll want to bring a few essentials:
- Extra diapers and wipes
- A pacifier (if you use one)
- A bottle or plan for feeding (a full belly = a sleepy, happy baby!)
- A change of clothes for parents (just in case!)
- Sentimental items you might want in the photos — a blanket from Grandma, a special stuffy, or a family heirloom
Pro tip: Dress comfortably and in neutral tones — soft creams, greys, or pastels photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your baby.
During the Session
Expect your session to last 2–4 hours, depending on baby’s mood. It’s normal to take breaks for feeding, changing, and soothing —I totally expects this!
You’ll likely start with:
- Wrapped or swaddled poses (great for helping baby settle)
- Unwrapped, natural shots to capture tiny details like hands, feet, and eyelashes
- Family and sibling portraits — these are optional but so special to include
I work slowly and patiently, following your baby’s cues. Safety always comes first — never force a pose.
After the Shoot
Within a couple of weeks, you’ll receive a gallery of beautifully edited images.
Consider investing in a few professional prints — holding those memories in your hands (rather than just scrolling past them on your phone) is truly priceless.
Final Thoughts
A newborn photoshoot isn’t just about pictures — it’s about preserving a fleeting moment in your family’s story.
Those sleepy smiles and tiny toes change faster than you think, and one day, you’ll look back at these images in awe of how small they once were.
So take a deep breath, let me guide you, and enjoy this peaceful pause amid the whirlwind of new parenthood.
